    Does Costco Sell Ground Turkey

Yes, Costco sells two types of ground turkey — Plainville Farms Organic Ground Turkey and Butterball All Natural Ground Turkey. Both are in the refrigerated meat section. Both are 93% lean and 7% fat.

Plainville Farms is USDA-Certified Organic, which is likely the cause for its higher price tag. Costco sells two 1.5-pound containers for $19.99. The Butterball version includes four 1.7-pound pouches for $23.99.

These prices are current as of June 2023.

How Much Is Costco Ground Turkey

Costco ground turkey ranges in price from $19.99 to $23.99. The organic version from Plainville Farms is more expensive, while the Butterball is cheaper.

Costco Organic Ground Turkey Price—$19.99 for two 1.5-pound containers

Costco Butterball Ground Turkey Price — $23.99 for four 1.7-pound pouches

The warehouse giant sells four 1.7-pound pouches of Butterball All Natural Ground Turkey 93% lean for $23.99 — which breaks down to $3.52 per pound. The same product sells for $5.29 at our local grocery store. Costco is 33 percent cheaper!

As for the organic version, we couldn’t find Plainville Farms in our local stores, but one had a pound of Koch’s Ground Turkey for $9.99.  Comparing that price to Costco’s version, which costs $6.66 per pound, you are again saving about a third.

Costco ground turkey is a good deal no matter which product you buy.

How Many Pounds Is Costco Ground Turkey

The containers of ground turkey, which are sold in a pouch and a plastic tray, vary in size from 1.5 pounds to 1.7 pounds. The organic version has two 1.7-pound packages, while the Butterball Ground Turkey contains four 1.5-pound pouches.

These weights are for raw meat. Cooked ground turkey shrinks by approximately 25 percent.

Here’s the breakdown if you wonder how many grams are in Costco ground turkey. Each Butterball product contains four 109.7-gram pouches, while the retailer sells two 679-gram Plainville Farms Organic Ground Turkey containers.

As a reference, most ground turkey recipes call for one pound. The exception to this rule is turkey burgers, usually ⅓ lb. (just like our favorite Costco hamburger); meatloaf usually uses two pounds.

    Costco Ground Turkey Nutrition

Both versions of Costco ground turkey are 93 percent lean. This number means that only seven percent of the product is fat. Ground turkey, like all white meats, is naturally lean. Remember that the lower the fat percentage, the higher the probability of it drying out. Keep an eye on it as you cook.

Both Butterball and Plainville Farms have 150 calories per four-ounce serving. Butterball has 22 grams of protein, while Plainville has 21 grams.

    Costco Ground Turkey Storage

The USDA recommends using the product 1-2 days after purchase. If you can’t eat the ground turkey before the cook-by date, freeze the Costco ground turkey. If properly frozen, ground turkey is good for 3-4 months.

Cooked ground turkey is good for 3-4 days. Make sure to store leftovers promptly (within 2 hours). Harmful bacteria can grow on the meat if left out.

It’s safe to refreeze ground turkey that’s been adequately defrosted. You may have a slight degradation in quality, although we’ve never noticed.

The best way to defrost frozen ground turkey is by placing it in the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, you can set the turkey in a watertight bag (if not already in the pouch) in a bowl of cool water. Change the water every 10-20 minutes until the meat defrosts.

    Costco Ground Turkey FAQ

How Do I Stop Ground Turkey From Drying Out

Ground turkey is naturally lean, which is excellent if you are trying to limit your fat intake. The main drawback of lean meat is they dry out quickly due to the lack of fat. Here are some ways to keep your ground turkey moist.

    1. Don’t overhandle the meat. Only touch it when necessary. Squeezing, patting, and mixing may lead to moisture loss.
    2. When cooking, don’t press down on the meat to release juices. It needs all the moisture it can get.
    3. Add a couple of tablespoons of oil to the meat. We love olive or avocado oils for their heart-healthy benefits.

    Costco Ground Turkey Serving Size

According to the USDA, the serving size of Costco ground turkey is four ounces. The warehouse sells Plainville Farms Organic Ground Turkey in two 1.5-pound packages containing 24 ounces or six servings and Butterball Ground Turkey in four 1.7-pound pouches containing a little less than seven servings.

These package sizes differ slightly from the typical one-pound grocery store package with four servings.

Some ground turkey recipes call for one pound. The exception to this rule is turkey burgers which are ⅓ lb. each, and meatloaf usually uses two pounds.
