French Onion Soup Costco Cooking Instructions

The manufacturer provides three ways to cook. We tried them all, and our favorite was using the oven/microwave. The results were comparable to the oven-only method while taking half the time. The microwave works if you are short on time; just know that the cheese mixes into the soup. It’s ok, but not as good.
CONVENTIONAL OVEN
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Place the soup cheese on top in an ovenproof bowl.
- Heat for 40 minutes or until the cheese becomes golden brown.
MICROWAVE OVEN (The Cheese Mixes In)*
- Place one soup, cheese side up, in a microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat on HIGH for 3 minutes.
- Stir and heat for 2 minutes more.
The directions recommend using a 10-ounce mug with a 4″ diameter opening. When frozen, the brick of soup is bigger than the mug. Not to worry, as it cooks, it melts down but somehow doesn’t make a mess.
QUICKER OVEN METHOD Using Oven and Microwave
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Place one soup, cheese on top, in a bowl safe for microwave and conventional oven.
- Heat on HIGH for 3 minutes in the microwave oven.
- Remove soup from the microwave oven; sprinkle 2 Tbsp of additional shredded Swiss or other firm cheese.
- Heat in the oven for 20 minutes or until the cheese becomes golden brown.
Costco French Onion Soup Review
To properly review Costco French Onion Soup, we must discuss its convenience, price, and taste.
CONVENIENCE:
Each serving is vacuum-sealed and easy to open, making preparation a breeze. The main downside is how long they take to cook. While the microwave method only takes minutes, the preferred combination oven-microwave process takes 30 plus minutes when you factor in preheating time, which is fine for dinner but is not feasible for lunch.
PRICE:
If we break the $10.99 price down per serving, each cup costs $1.83, which is an excellent deal for what you get. Add some sweet potato fries and a side salad, and you have dinner for less than $3 per person!
TASTE:
We made the soup using every method listed. It was a bit better when making it in the oven, but it took almost an hour! For that amount of time, we wished it tasted closer to homemade. It has some flavor without being overly salty. Although one of the things we love about French Onion Soup is the depth of flavor the carmelized onions add. This product needs that critical element of French onion soup.
OVERALL
We would give the Costco French onion Soup a 6 out of 10 rating. It’s an excellent price. However, the serving size lends itself to a lunch versus a dinner, but it takes too long to be a

Toast — Cut a piece of toast and place it on the soup.
Crispy Onions — Crispy onions shouldn’t be relegated to green bean casseroles on Thanksgiving. Instead, put a handful in the soup for
